It's not a stupid question at all.

You can indeed send your Canon teleconverter and Canon lens to Canon to get them matched up. Wether or not you can get it done for free is if the teleconverter or the lens(or both) are still under a year old. I was able to get mine done for free because both were within the one year warranty period. The Canon rep told me that if your lens is out of the warranty period, but your teleconverter is still within that period, you can still get it done for free because the TC relies on the lens.

As for your 2x and 1.4x teleconverter, it's a general rule that a 2x TC will always have worse image quality than a 1.4x TC just by default. Wouldn't hurt to send them in though based on my experience with the focus reliablity of Canon teleconverters. ;)

Just a stupid question, but can I send my Canon teleconverter and Canon lens to Canon service to get the teleconverter fine-tuned for the particular lens? For fee, I assume.

I have a 2x teleconverter and I know that is not as good as the 1.4x. The images have bit gray/dull colors:-(
